I went to college in Long Beach, CA and lived there for nearly 8 years. I try to make it back down to visit friends at least a couple of times per year, though that seems more and more difficult to do as the years go by. Usually, those are just very hurried trips, without a lot of sightseeing. So, since we had an unfilled afternoon, I tried to take advantage of it and get in a bit of photography along the way.

Wow, it's been awhile since I've had much to post! I'll blame it on my day job. Anyway, we snuck away for a couple of days down to Southern California and I made sure to keep my camera with me at all times. I didn't take nearly as many photos as I'd have wanted, but it's a start. The bay in Long Beach, CA near the Queen Mary is always a peaceful place to wander.

What I like about this shot:
(a) my subject was very cooperative :)
(b) I took this through a thick pane of plexiglass, and was surprised it came out as clearly as it did

What I don't like about this shot:
(a) it seems a bit too symmetrical
(b) the thick cement ridge separating bear from water irritates me
(c) aside from bear and reflection, there's nothing else interesting in the frame

Your Evaluation? Honest critiques appreciated. What could have made this a different and/or better shot?

What I like about this shot:
(a) the warm setting sun color
(b) the distinct depth
(c) the jagged edge of the tarp cutting diagonally across the shot
(d) it was a 'happenstance' find. I happened to catch a glance of the sun coming through the rain specked tarp out of the corner of my eye walking across the porch to click yet another sunset shot

What I don't like about this shot:
(a) the tarp piece is not in clear focus - so the whole shot ends up looking blurry
(b) the tarp piece is not large enough to really catch and keep your eye before it wanders and stays on the blurry background.
(c) the background composition is just mediocre. I like the sun, the bridge and the clouds, but the trees on the right are too dark and distracting from the shot

My Evaluation:
(a) thumbs up on 'concept' and 'find'
(b) thumbs down on execution

What do you think? (Kind honesty appreciated.) :)

I ventured out to take photos Sunday morning - for the first time in weeks. It was a bright sunny morning, which was great in some respects. But I can't seem to figure out how to set my camera to avoid the type of overexposure I see in most of my pics. Any tips? My camera is pretty limited in it's options (Canon PowerShot G3), but if y'all have any general hints I can use, I'd love to learn. Thanks!
